1966 Termini Changes
August Changes
On Tuesday, August 16th, 1966, the one-way road system was extended to Burgh Quay. The direction of traffic flow was eastbound from O'Connell Bridge to Tara Street. This meant that the whole south quays from Seán Heuston Bridge to Shaw Street was one-way eastbound. It was noted that this would involve major changes in termini. However, the month of August saw the city bus services being paralyzed by a trade union strike by road workshop staff supported by all busmen from August 8th to 24th. Buses returned on the 25th, and hence the new termini arrangements were in force from this date. They arrangements involved buses on Eden Quay and Burgh Quay as follows:
- Routes 27, 28, 33, 41, 41A, 41B, 42, 42A, 42B and 60 moved from Eden Quay to the river side of Burgh Quay. Incoming services travelled by Eden Quay and O'Connell Bridge to Burgh Quay and outgoing buses turned left onto Butt Bridge.
- Routes 53, 53A, 53B were given a new terminus on Marlborough Street (outside what now is the Salvation Army offices). Inbound buses used Eden Quay, while outbound they used Lower Abbey Street.
- Routes 1, 2, 44, 44B, 45, 47, 47A, 47B, 48A, 52, 61 and 62 moved from Burgh Quay to the river side of Eden Quay. Inbound services travelled via Tara Street, while outbound services traveled via O'Connell Bridge turning left from D'Olier Street to Townsend Street.
September Changes
This proved unsatisfactory and the Gardaí agreed to allow some outgoing services to operate from Burgh Quay via George's Quay and Moss Street to Townsend Street. So from Sunday 25th September 1966, the following arrangements were put in place:
- Routes 27, 28, 33, 41, 41A, 41B, 42, 42A, 42B and 60 reverted back to Eden Quay, whilst routes 1, 2 and 53 remained at their respective new termini.
- Routes 44, 44B, 45, 47, 47A, 47B, 48A, 52, 61 and 62 reverted back to Burgh Quay. Incoming services operated via College Street and Westmoreland Street, while outbound services operated via George's Quay and Moss Street to Townsend Street.
